Visionary #2 – Association Lumiere
The women of Mali captivate people from all around the world. They often dress in colourful outfits that exude pride, power and creativity. Women in Mali are the largest force of informal educators, as they are responsible for the home and the raising of their children. Behind closed doors, the life of most Malian women is tough.
Up to 80% of women in Mali are circumcised. Most women are illiterate (around 70%) and have no access to income.
The Association of Lumiere comprises of women from the Kalabankoro community. Most are illiterate housewives but they are focused on ensuring they have the means to support their children. They believe that all women in Mali should be able to have economic freedom. They set up the micro credit organization in 2006. |
