“Human Potential is the world’s biggest untapped resource” Elise Klein (Mali Initiative Co-founder)

We don’t need million dollar projects run by bureaucrats, however we do need millions of community projects led by local visionaries.
Dear Mali Supporter,

Ok, so it is on again and this time its going to be bigger and better than ever - the 2009 Mali Breakfast! Its on Tuesday the 26th of May @ the Melbourne Zoo (which means to you can enjoy the animals after!)

We are going to need as much as help as you can to get people to this one - its a tough year - especially for the people of Mali. We have made the event affordable so everyone can take part in this magical morning. Please feel free to bring along family, work colleges and friends. It is something for the heart and soul.

You will be pleased to know that because of your help last year, 2 classrooms in Konosso have just been successfully completed. The community are over the moon with this accomplishment. You can see pictures here at www.mali-initiative.org. This year, we are raising funds for our microcredit program for women and the education of young people. 100% of all money raised goes directly into our projects in Mali.

Please find attached the and booking form - all bookings can be made by emailing mali-initiative@reach.org.au, faxing the completed booking form to 03 9416 2230, or sending to The Mali Initiative, c/o Reach Foundation, 152- 156 Wellington St, Collingwood 3066.

Lets come together and make this one count. Looking forward to seeing you on the 26th of May.
Construction Konosso, Mali

News: School Construction in Konosoo well started!
Our implementing partners Youchaou, Karim and Kadi visited the site where the new class rooms will be built in Konosso. This is what they said of their visit to the construction site in Konosso   "It was a very great moment. We were received by the chief of the village, his advisors, the director of the school and all the elders of the village. The population was very glad and welcomed us. At our arrival the population was amazed because they did not believe the class rooms will be built for them. We were told that they even betted with one of the mayors friends in Konosso that the mayor played a turn with them. The bet has been paid by a chicken given to the mayors friend. The chief of the village also welcomed us with chickens.

We had a meeting with the population about the organization of the works. They were very happy and made 6 groups of 10 persons each for the helping hands. They also chose the working days for each group. Each group is also divided into small groups according the works to be done. For example digging holes for the base, lying bricks, mixing cement with sand or drawing water…

The construction is everyday except Mondays which are their weekly market days. The workers are really committed to work and they love what they are doing because most of them especially youth did not know how to lay bricks or attach irons and many other things that they were doing on the site now. Many of them have never seen and never know how to construct a house with cement.

The population is so surprise and so happy even old men and women who are not part of groups decided to water the bricks. The bricks should be watered two times a day to make them consistent and solid as it is too hot here.

The groups are mainly composed with old persons; this is due to the lack of young people in the village now. Almost all the youth is presently abroad because there is nothing to do in village after the harvest. We were told that in each family 3 or 5 young men or young girls left for the traditional gold mining site or working in the cities. They spend six months there and most of them return back with sicknesses like HIV/AIDS, unwanted pregnancies or other sexually transmitted illnesses.

Now the construction is going fast, they already made the base last Saturday. The population is very happy and wishes long life to the NGO and its partner Mali Initiative. They thanked you very much".

The Mali Initiative would also like to thank all you that made this project possible. The Konosso Classrooms will be finished by the end of March.
